Why I want to Intern for PPAC!

Nikki 2015

As the new Intern for Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, I am excited to learn about the legislative process by working for a nonprofit that helps support Planned Parenthood health centers who are committed to providing non-judgmental reproductive health care to over a million women and men every year.

As my graduation date began to creep closer, I realized that it was time to place more of an emphasis on identifying my career goals. I am currently a senior at California State University Long Beach and I was fortunate enough to get accepted into the “Semester in Sacramento” program. This program allowed me to move to our state capitol and obtain an internship that would give me a deeper understanding of the legislative process. I had many options to choose from which included interning for various assembly members and senators, but Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California appealed to me most because their views and goals aligned well with mine. Their goal of providing accessible healthcare to men and women is something that I value and hope to be a part of.

When I was younger I personally benefitted from the care that Planned Parenthood health centers had provided. They gave not only me, but also many of my friends’ access to birth control. The services that Planned Parenthood affiliates provide are so necessary to communities and I am enthusiastic to be giving back in whatever way I can. Not only am I working for a nonprofit that I personally care about, but I am also getting first-hand experience in the political and public policy world and learning how advocacy efforts can improve the lives of Californians throughout the state.

My goals for this internship are to acquaint myself with lobbying and how it can be used positively to influence members of the Legislature. I hope to solidify ideas about my future goals and to network as much as I possibly can. I would like to come out of this internship with a solid grasp of how bills become laws and the processes in between. As my first weeks interning at Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California comes to an end, I continue to be more optimistic about growing my professional abilities and learning about the legislative process.
