With Thanksgiving on the horizon, it’s only fitting to look back on 2014 and remind ourselves of what we are thankful for this year. And there is so much to be thankful for in California as we continue to move forward public policy protecting and expanding women’s health and elect pro-women’s health champions!
Thanks, California, for voting to protect women’s health!
On Election Day we stopped the conservative tidal wave by electing many pro-women’s health leaders -- a major accomplishment of 2014. While opponents of women’s health took power in the U.S. Senate, and picked up seats in the majority of state legislatures across the country, in California we were, once again, able to buck that national trend: we kept our pro-women’s health incumbents and a majority of champions of Planned Parenthood’s issues in office. This is truly something to be grateful for.
Now we need our champions to keep California as THE leader in access to reproductive health care. We are the incubator for pro-women’s health, pro-access legislation and will continue to hold that role because we elected (and re-elected) strong leaders to represent us and our state.
Thanks, California, for pro-women’s health policies!
PPAC also experienced many legislative wins this year. Your support helped us get five priority bills signed by the governor, including improved access to contraception! Other legislation passed this year allows new Planned Parenthood health centers to get up and running more quickly, and allows patients to access telehealth through their smart phones or computers. These bills are critical to increasing health care access!
We are thankful for our supporters and coalition partners around the state for all their hard work in advocating for these measures.
And last, but not least, we are grateful for the fresh faces walking the halls of our office here at Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California. With our ambitious goals of continuing to improve women’s health in California, it is vital to have the necessary staff to see them through and lead the way. We are excited to welcome new staff members Jessica, Cyndi, and Christina to the team and look forward to working with them to make PPAC even stronger in the New Year.
Now pass the stuffing! Wishing you and everyone a joyful Thanksgiving,
Erica on PPAC’s Legislative Team
