Thankful for statements of support for Planned Parenthood!
We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support we’ve received since the announcement that Susan G. Komen will stop funding breast cancer screenings at PP health centers.
California Democratic Congressional Delegation:
"As the largest number of women legislators in Congress, we have come together to express our concern and displeasure over Susan G. Komen's decision. Caving to a Congressional right-wing witch hunt won't just hurt Planned Parenthood, it sets back women's health." Read full statement.
State Senator Noreen Evans:
"In the past, Susan G. Komen for the Cure funding has enabled many Planned Parenthood health centers to provide women with breast health education, screenings, and referrals for mammograms — lifesaving care for women whose only source of health care is Planned Parenthood. It should be noted that Planned Parenthood spends 97 percent of their resources on preventative health services – not abortions. The missions of the two organizations are so intertwined it defies logic that Susan G. Komen for the Cure would sever its relationship with Planned Parenthood and deny the most disadvantaged women the critical care they need." Read full statement.
Congressman Mike Honda:
"I’m writing to you today because the issue of cancer is deeply personal to me. In 2004, my wife passed away from ovarian cancer and last year, my long-time Chief of Staff successfully battled breast cancer; proving that early detection is still our greatest weapon against this disease.
This is why I was stunned when the news broke on Tuesday, January 31, that the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation has decided to not renew grant funding for breast cancer prevention, screenings, and education at Planned Parenthood health centers around the nation. I find this development alarming; Planned Parenthood screenings have been essential cornerstones in the battle to help detect and prevent breast cancer and other deadly cancers nationwide." Read full statement.
State Senator Alex Padilla:
"Planned Parenthood has performed more than 4 million breast exams over the past five years, nearly 170,000 of these exams were funded by Komen grants. By terminating these grants, Komen will be denying access to tens of thousands of women. These are critical services in communities of need. That is not consistent with Komen’s stated mission as I understand it,” said Senator Padilla" Read full statement.
Speaker John Perez:
I was deeply dismayed to learn of the decision by the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation to sever their ties with Planned Parenthood. I believe this decision undercuts the core mission of Susan G. Komen in fighting for prevention and treatment of breast cancer. Read full statement.
We are so grateful for the support from California leaders and elected officials and all that they have done to stand with Planned Parenthood. This list of statements of support is not complete, and we are learning of new statements each day. We are deeply appreciative of all of the statements supporting Planned Parenthood!
