On Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014, the Santa Barbara Pro-Choice Coalition hosted it’s 11th Annual Great American Write In to commemorate Women’s Equality Day celebrating the 94th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, granting US women the right to vote. Exercising women’s hard fought rights to participate in the political process, participants had the opportunity to sign dozens of letters to legislators in support of achieving women’s equality. More than 1,500 letters and petitions were signed at the event! The letters ranged from urging President Obama to support repealing the Hyde Amendment to thanking the Santa Barbara City Council for defending legal challenges to the city’s clinic entrance buffer zone law.
This year’s theme was “#JointheDissent Because Women Are Not Yet Equal” and was inspired by Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s recent outspoken dissent in the controversial Hobby Lobby ruling, which seriously infringed on women’s reproductive rights. This year’s event also featured a reading by Santa Barbara’s favorite local columnist Starshine Roshell, who recently wrote a Feminist call-to-action, “Are you a Feminist NOW?”
Participants celebrated by eating a specially made “Votes for Women” cake. This year also featured a first-ever Feminist Icon Photobooth, encouraging participants to pose with feminist icons from the 1960s and post on social media.
Finally, the event had a “Crafty Contraceptives” action station, a tongue and cheek response to the disappointing Hobby Lobby Supreme Court Ruling.
More than 20 local social justice non-profits and coalition members participated including: Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee, Coalition Against Gun Violence, Pacific Pride Foundation, League of Women Voters, Santa Barbara County Commission on Women, AAUW, UCSB Women’s Center, Planned Parenthood and Planned Parenthood Action Fund, Democratic Women, Democratic Party of Santa Barbara County, Legal Aid Foundation, Santa Barbara Women Lawyers and more!
