In the face of the Trump Administration’s relentless attacks on sexual and reproductive health, California continues to be the state of the resistance.
Gov. Jerry Brown protected sexual and reproductive health access by signing SB 743 (Hernandez) a bill that safeguards a woman’s right to pick her preferred family planning provider. The bill is co-sponsored by Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California and Essential Access Health.
Called the Protection of Choice for Family Planning Act, SB 743 ensures that millions of Californians now enrolled in Medi-Cal managed care plans can continue to receive family planning from the provider of their choice. It also codifies federal “freedom of choice” language in state law.
This is crucial as the Trump administration continues its all-out war on women’s health, the latest attack coming Friday with the decision to allow employers to opt out of an Obama-era contraceptive mandate for religious or moral reasons.
“Governor Brown and the California Legislature understand that access to sexual and reproductive health is not up for negotiation,” said Crystal Strait, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California. “While the Trump administration continues its loathsome attacks on women’s health, seemingly on a daily basis, California is sending Washington a clear message, that safeguarding reproductive health is and will continue to be a top priority."
