Art that Saves Lives

The Medea Project

“I’m not interested in art for art’s sake. I’m interested in art that saves lives”
- Rhodessa Jones, Co-Artistic Director, THE MEDEA PROJECT: THEATER FOR INCARCERATED WOMEN

Planned Parenthood Northern California is proud to partner with THE MEDEA PROJECT: THEATER FOR INCARCERATED WOMEN on “Birthright?” presented by Brava! For Women in the Arts and Cultural Odyssey in San Francisco.

“Birthright?” celebrates THE MEDEA PROJECT: THEATER FOR INCARCERATED WOMEN’S 25th anniversary. It explores deeply personal questions and experiences related to women's reproductive rights from the perspective of formerly incarcerated and HIV positive women of color.

This partnership highlights the wide range of preventive services that Planned Parenthood Northern California provides.  As the first Planned Parenthood in the U.S. to do HIV testing and as an innovator in counseling, sex education, community-based health care delivery, and interventions for dealing with intimate partner violence, we are proud to collaborate with THE MEDEA PROJECT, a trailblazer in using “art as social activism”

THE MEDEA PROJECT: THEATER FOR INCARCERATED WOMEN is a model for reducing recidivism and diverting women away from the criminal justice system using an arts-based approach. Founded by Co-Artistic Director and acclaimed theater artist Rhodessa Jones in 1990, THE MEDEA PROJECT heals, transforms and empowers individuals around the world.
