The Yes on 56 - Save Lives California campaign recently released its first ad on statewide cable and digital outlets.
If passed, this initiative, supported by Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, would increase California's cigarette tax by $2 per pack, with an equivalent increase on other tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes containing nicotine. Money raised by the tax will fund healthcare costs and research into cures for cancer and other tobacco-related diseases.
The compelling 30-second ad focuses on the costly and deadly results of Big Tobacco's relentless targeting of our kids and the taxpayer cost of tobacco-related disease.
AD script: It's out there targeting our kids, hooking more each year. Smoking is still killing Californians and costing taxpayers billions. That's why the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and pediatricians say Yes on Prop 56. It's a proven way to prevent kids from starting to smoke and it works like a user fee so smokers pay their fair share of health costs. Tobacco still targets kids. It's our job to protect them. Vote Yes on 56.
Proposition 56, the California Healthcare, Research and Prevention Tobacco Tax Act of 2016 is backed by Save Lives California, a coalition of health advocates and others that includes, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, the American Heart Association, American Lung Association, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, the California Medical Association, SEIU California, the California Hospital Association, Blue Shield of California, California Dental Association and philanthropist Tom Steyer.
