On October 1, 2015, over 600 guests, elected officials, celebrities, entertainment and business leaders came together to honor and celebrate "Champions of Choice" at Politics, Sex & Cocktails, hosted by the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project Los Angeles County (PPAP). The event, which took place at Spectra by Wolfgang Puck at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood and was filled to capacity, began with a VIP reception, followed by general reception and program.
This year's honorees included Nina Tassler, Chairman, CBS Entertainment; Lena Dunham, Creator and Star of HBO’s Girls; and the Honorable Jimmy Gomez, California State Assembly. Presenters for the evening were actress Allison Janney and 2013 Champion of Choice, actress Annabeth Gish.
The highlight of the evening came when Lena Dunham spontaneously auctioned off the uterus-themed sweater which she donned for the evening – and then removed onstage to the highest bid of 4K.
"At Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project, we're committed to protecting access to affordable health care, medically accurate sex education, and safe, legal abortion," said Celinda Vazquez, VP of Public Affairs for PPAP. "Our advocacy efforts are especially critical in light of the relentless attacks against women’s reproductive access at both the state and national level."
For over a decade, Planned Parenthood has honored "Champions of Choice" at the annual event. Past recipients include: Gloria Steinem, Amy Poehler, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, David E. Kelly, Calista Flockhart, Assembly Speaker John A. Perez, Shonda Rhimes, Sarah Silverman, Matthew Weiner, and Attorney General Kamala Harris. Honorees are Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project supporters who demonstrate a strong commitment to women's health and reproductive rights.
Funds raised at Politics, Sex & Cocktails support PPAP's advocacy and education work in support of a variety of reproductive health issues. The Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project is devoted to improving the affordability of reproductive health care, promoting commonsense policies that prevent unplanned pregnancy and STDs, and ensuring access to safe, legal abortion.
