Women's Health Champion, Congresswoman Lois Capps Announces her retirement
Planned Parenthood Thanks Congresswoman Lois Capps for Leadership in Advancing Women’s Health
WASHINGTON, DC – Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Planned Parenthood of Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo Counties, Inc. (PPSBVSLO) today expressed deep gratitude for Congresswoman Lois Capps (CA – CD24) for her 17 year legacy of leadership in advancing and protecting access to health care for women along California’s Central Coast and across the country.
“Since elected in 1998, Congresswoman Capps has served as a stalwart champion for women and families living along California’s Central Coast,” said Jenna Tosh, president & CEO of PPSBVSLO. “Her outspoken leadership on women’s health issues has helped ensure our communities are able to make personal medical decisions and have the ability to access the affordable health care they need and deserve.
“Congresswoman Capps’ leaves behind a legacy that demonstrates her commitment to women’s health and her drive for equality and fairness. During her time in Congress, she has fought to include and protect health benefits in the Affordable Care Act, co-sponsored fair pay legislation for women, and fought to protect access to safe, legal abortion. Her fearless spirit and willingness to stand up for women at home and abroad has set a high standard for leadership in her district. We are immensely thankful for her kindness, compassion, and steadfast commitment to the health and well-being of women and families.”
"We are incredibly grateful to Representative Lois Capps for her 17 years of leadership," said Cecile Richards, president, Planned Parenthood Federation of America. "Rep. Capps has never wavered in her support for women's health and reproductive health care. She led efforts in the House of Representatives to ensure that health plans would be required to include a full range of preventive services for women including birth control without a copay; and she fought tirelessly against multiple attempts to block low-income women and families from coming to Planned Parenthood for affordable preventive health care.
"As a former nurse, Rep. Capps uniquely understands that a woman's personal health care decisions are best made between her and her health care provider. We are grateful to have a champion like her that has worked hard to ensure all women – no matter where they live or how much money they have – can access the health care they need, without barriers getting in the way. We celebrate her legacy and her leadership on behalf of women," continued Richards.
